Frequently Asked Questions

What is the treatment plan?

Psychotherapy and coaching have two fundamental aims. The first is to assist in developing a healthy, full, and meaningful life. This is achieved through “clarifying your values” by exploring what is most valuable and important in your life and the goals you want to accomplish. Values are described as your hearts deepest desires for who you want to be and what you want to stand for. Using your values as a guide and inspiration, you can set goals and take action to change your life for the better and in the process, develop a sense of meaning, purpose and vitality.

The second aim is to help you to develop skills that will allow you to handle any situation, such as painful thoughts and feelings, far more effectively and in a way where they will have much less impact and influence over you. This set of skills is called “mindfulness”. Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness, openness and focus. By developing a state of mindfulness, painful thoughts and feelings will have much less impact in your life by allowing you to effectively handle even the most difficult feelings, urges, memories, thoughts and sensations. As you develop mindfulness you can break self-defeating habits or destructive patterns of behavior, rise beyond your fears and change your attitude in life-enhancing ways.

What is the duration of the treatment?

Mindful Psychology is specialized in short term therapy sessions with maximum impact (approximately 6 sessions), however medium-term and long-term psychological treatment options are also available.

It is always hard to know how many psychotherapy sessions you may need prior to commencing your first appointment. A good rule of thumb is to commit to six sessions and then on the sixth session, we will assess your progress and see if you may benefit further from additional treatment. Alternatively, you may find that you do not need all six sessions. It is also very important that you feel you are able to voice any dissatisfaction or concerns during the process of therapy. If you would prefer an alternative approach, or you are not happy with the way your therapy is progressing, this will be taken into account and we will work together to find a treatment option which works best for you.

What are the benefits and risks of therapy?

Psychotherapy involves practice and hard work. The amount of work that you put in is directly proportional to the amount of benefit that you receive. There are no guarantees that psychotherapy will produce positive or intended results; there are no "quick fixes" and no miracles. An important part of therapy will consist of learning new skills during the sessions and investing time to practice and apply them in between sessions. The more you practice, the more benefits you will achieve. Occasionally, painful thoughts, sensations, feelings, memories and urges will be discussed. These feelings may make therapy challenging or even frustrating at times, however, they are an important part of working through the process. Some clients have been known to make life-altering decisions whilst undergoing therapy, which often affects those closest to them. This can be quite common and is not something to be fearful of. It is important to note that we will be working collaboratively as equal team members and you will never be pressed or coerced into anything you are uncomfortable with.

Does my health insurance cover the sessions?

The Dutch health insurance system is complex and each insurer and package has different criteria for reimbursement. Please be aware that it cannot be guaranteed whether you will succeed in claiming back fees via your health insurance company. International and European health insurances often reimburse fees partially or fully. As Drs. Carmen Sánchez Iglesias holds the title “Psycholoog NIP”, a personal AGB-code and a code of good practice, the costs of the sessions are partly or fully covered by some additional Dutch health insurance packages.
